Wrap-up
The top two seeds, Riverside and American River advanced to Sunday’s title game to continue the battle for the State. The Tigers last won in 2005 and have made the last four State Title games, while the Beavers are the first team from Northern California to reach the title game since 1996. The two teams have already played three times this year and Riverside has won all three, but Sunday will be the final decider. The third place game is set with the #2-seed from each region squaring off. Long Beach will represent the South and Santa Rosa the North.

Game Notes- Riverside kept up its undefeated streak and kept marching towards its second State Title in three years. Fresno managed to tack up a pair of goals, but the Tigers controlled the entire match. SoCal Player of the Year Jennifer Grutz led Riverside with three goals, along with Britany Koralewski and Tania Acevedo added three tallies.

Game Notes- American River took a 3-1 lead at the beginning of the first quarter, but Chaffey evened it up at three just two minutes before the intermission. The Beavers took the lead again before the buzzer and did not give up the lead the rest of the way. American River took a two goal lead at the start of the third quarter and carried that lead up to the final buzzer.

Game Notes- Santa Rosa advanced to Sunday by knocking out hometown favorite Fresno City. The two team’s were locked in a stalemate for the first 21 minutes of the game locked in a 2-2 tie, however those final three minutes of the third quarter were all Santa Rosa. The Bear Cubs scored three goals in the final three minutes of the third quarter and with 1:48 left in the contest they added another goal to take a 6-2 lead. Fresno was four goals down and facing the end of their season, yet refused to concede victory to Santa Rosa. The Rams scored three straight goals, the last with 15 ticks on the clock, to pull within one, but the Bear Cubs held on to advance to Sunday with a 7-6 decision. The Rams finished the season with an 18-17 record and also placed Alyson Moss on the All-Tournament Team.

Game Notes- The first quarter was even until the final minute when Mieke Howell’s outside shot gave Long Beach a 3-2 lead. The Vikings then scored the next four goals to increase their lead to five and the rout was on. Eight different players scored for Long Beach as the cruised into championships Sunday. The Panthers end their season with a 27-15 record. Chaffey also placed Goalie Georgina “Tootsie” Diaz on the All-Tournament Team.

Game Notes: Two-Time All American Goalie Jessica McLaughlin pitched a shutout to move Riverside into fourth straight title game. McLaughlin had 15 saves in the game and her teammates made sure that the Bear Cubs paid for every missed shot on the other end of the tank. Eleven different Tigers scored in the game led by SoCal Player of the Year Jennifer Grutz’s hat trick. Riverside is now 34-0 on the season and tomorrow they will play for their second State Title of the last three years. Santa Rosa will play in the third place game.

Game Notes: American River knocked off defending State Champion Long Beach to become the first team from Northern California to reach the title game since 1996, when Merced lost to Rio Hondo in the first year of women’s water polo as a CCCAA sport. Two-time All American Ali Pierce led the Beavers with seven goals and four of those goals came in the second half as she led her team’s comeback. Long Beach held a 5-4 lead at the intermission, but the Beavers scored four straight goals to start the second half maintained the lead the rest of the way. American River will play undefeated Riverside in the title game tomorrow and Long Beach will play Santa Rosa for third place. The Beavers have lost to Riverside three times this year- 13-9, 14-4, 18-4.
